LUMUT

Girls from the Pokot tribe narrowly missed mutilation. Two of these girls had been wanted for marriage, and being orphans, they could not refuse. In the nick of time, they heard of the Lumut Kinship Home, and ran for refuge. They now have hope of going to school and they see a bright future."

Region: Turkana.

Landscape: Desert with one river supplying good water and fertile grazing grounds along its banks.

Tribe: Pokot.

Religion: Boys in the Pokot tribe undergo an animal ownership rite of passage so that they can have animals to present for dowry to a woman. Many die after fighting and animal rustling. In order to prepare for this rite, they often drink alcohol or use drugs.

Leadership: Communal property looked after under a clan system with clan elders. Because there is no land ownership, people are often fighting over water holes and grazing land.
